Bayt Al Qahwah (Homewood)
- This Yemeni-style coffee shop features a variety of coffee and tea styles. Don’t miss the Saudi coffee (white coffee with saffron), and the Sanaani coffee (with clove and cardamom). They also have a variety of sweets and baked goods. Don’t miss out on the Kunafa, one of your site admin’s personal favourites! For our muslim friends, there is a prayer room on site.
Daily Edition (Homewood)
- At the time of this entry, Daily Edition is one of the area’s newer coffee spots. It’s a smaller shop in Homewood, specializing in beautifully presented coffees and teas. They also have a variety of pastries – and a selection of books, as well. Don’t overlook this rising star in the Birmingham metro’s active coffee scene.
Gatos & Beans (Birmingham, Avondale area)
- This is the Birmingham area’s only cat cafe! You can enjoy your coffee in the company of cats that are up for adoption. (Gatos & Beans is a partner with well-known cat rescue and shelter Kitty Kat Haven , where your site admin and his wife got two of their cats.) There is a fee to visit with the cats, as with many cat cafes. (This helps pay for their care, supports KKH, and keeps visitor numbers manageable.) Reservations are advised, particularly on weekends, as visitor slots can fill up fast.
June Coffee (Birmingham, downtown)
- June had its beginnings just roasting coffee. That naturally led to opening the café. The web site says part of the motivation was so they’d have some company as they work. Customers report this is a good plan, as it’s a friendly, inviting space, with a vriety of tasty drinks. Of course, you can buy coffee by the pound, all with the origin and variety noted. Want tacos with your coffee? Ladybird Taco is a partner.
The Red Cat (multiple locations)
- A hometown favourite, Red Cat sprung up from one location at Pepper Place, to open another shop across from Railroad Park (a perfect location for those who like to enjoy their coffee outdoors), and yet another in the main lobby of UAB hospital Highlands campus. (This is the one your site admin has used most. The staff here are always quite friendly, and also make sure to post the origin and variety of coffee served on any given day. That’s important to coffee geeks like us!)
Seeds Coffee Co. (Homewood)
- Seeds has always been inviting, and is also willing to sell green coffee beans if you ask nicely. 🙂 (Some of us like to roast at home on occasion.) The sweet and savory biscuits get high marks. Enjoy a large outdoor seating area.
